Tokyo – Mookie Betts will have to return to Shortstop waiting until Dodgers returns home from Japan.
Director Dave Roberts said on Monday that Bings will miss both the Dodgers games that open their season in the Tokyo Dome this week against Chicago Cubs.
Betts are expected to be ready for the local Dodgers match on March 27 against Detroit Tigers. But in the meantime, Roberts said that the evaders “thinking” in returning him home to Los Angeles early, before leaving the team after the second match on Wednesday against the Cubs.
“He is still trying to find his way [physically]Roberts said. “I think the question is, what is the best to make it ready for the opening day? We are still talking. This is on the table.”
Betts first started feeling ill before the team left Japan last week. He made his final appearance in the Al -Saba League on March 9, as he continued to move to a short position that is scheduled to play full -time this year after spending three months there last year. But after reporting its symptoms to the club the next day, he was detained from the last two team matches in Arizona.
Roberts said that there was not a lot of initial consideration of the presence of Betts, the trip to Tokyo,; I am not worried that his illness, which Roberts said did not believe that doctors were infectious, would spread to others on the team.
However, throughout his illness, Betts lost approximately 15 pounds, according to Roberts, and he looked significantly more thinner when he reached Tokyo. Although he finally started to feel better in recent days, he was still fighting the continuous effects of dryness and fatigue.
“The thing is when you lose a lot of weight, when it dries, this opens the person to soft tissue injuries,” said Roberts. “We are aware of it. Until you take next week, call him, to build it, and his strength, do some baseball activities to prepare for the home match.”
Betts did not play in any Dodgers exhibition matches against Japanese teams this week. During a preliminary exercise on Sunday, the 32 -year -old MVP appeared clearly tired while taking the ground balls, and his hands on his knees were resting several times between the training.
Betts was scheduled to participate in a exercise on Monday, but it ended up canceling the session.
Roberts said that the return of additional losses from Betts to Shortstop contributed to the team’s decision to suspend it from Tuesday and Wednesday open the matches season.
The director also admitted that if the evaders knew that Betts would not be able to play in Tokyo, they would have made him staying from the trip.
