Barcelona is creating a large public square outside one of the most famous attractions in an attempt to alleviate the crushing crowds of tourists.
For years, the local population complained of crowding around La Sagrada Familia, the famous basilica designed by Antoni Gaudi. Tourists often prevent roads and sidewalks while taking selfies or group photos.
Last year, tourists were banned from taking pictures of the moving stairs that preceded the attractiveness of gravity after pushing the viral Tiktok direction to visitors to put their phones on the steps when the basilica appeared in the background.
The increasing number of attractions – more than four million annually – has put pressure on the surrounding neighborhood and often causes tension between visitors and locals.
To address the concerns of the population, the city authorities have announced plans to obtain a 6200 square meters of public square, which will serve as an “automatic hall for the temple”.

This will provide a space for visitors to gather, take pictures and enjoy the science of attraction – without spill on the roads or corridors used by the population.
The project of 2.7 million euros is expected to start in September and takes about eight and a half months.
The box will be built on the eastern side of Bazilica between the front of the cradle and the Plaça Gaudà on Carre DE La Marina, a famous street where tourists often gather to take pictures.
According to the Barcelona City Council, a large open area connecting Plaça Gaudà will be established with the stairs of access to Basilica, similar to other iconic spaces in the EXAMPLE region, such as the University of Barcelona.
“The new project helps in solving an area that is difficult to reconcile between visitors to the temple and the neighborhood.”
It aims to “manage the tourism phenomenon and deal with tensions resulting from the severity of the use of the area.”

Last year, Barcelona announced plans to spend 44 million euros to manag the 16 sites by visitors, including Sagrada Familia.
The plan includes publishing more detergents and police officers to keep the area clean and ensure safety.
It also intends to limit the flow of tourists to prevent overcrowding and ensure that they are not disappointed by their experience.
Local population in Barcelona has been tired for years with the huge number of tourists in the city.
Last year, the locals resorted to the use of water weapons to deter the city’s shouting tourists and thousands walked in the streets in the tourism control demonstration shouting: “Tourists return home.”
Many other areas in Spain felt the effect of turmoil. Madrid also protested the high rental and overcrowding prices due to group tourism.
Countless tourism rules were presented in common holiday places to reduce the pressure on the population, including restrictions on general drinking and parties and the use of rental services such as Airbnb.
Recently, the residents of Mallorca wrote an open message to tourists, urging them not to come to the island, because they “face the worst summer in the history of Mallorca.
